A study published in  the journal Nature Communications  reported that people who have had Covid-19 are more likely than non-infected individuals to experience gastrointestinal (GI) disorders within a year of infection, including liver issues, acute pancreatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux, and ulcers.

After analyzing 14 million medical records, the researchers found that persons with Covid-19 had a 36% higher likelihood of having GI issues than people who had not contracted the virus. This includes both those who were and those who werent admitted to the hospital as a result of the infection.

Further the study observed that among those infected with Covid-19 had, a 62% higher risk of getting stomach or small intestine ulcers, a 35% higher risk of having acid reflux, and a 46% higher risk of getting acute pancreatitis. Additionally a 54% higher risk of having irritable bowel syndrome, a 47% higher risk of stomach lining inflammation, and a 36% higher risk of experiencing an upset stomach without a clear explanation was also noted.

Likewise, the results showed that individuals who were infected with Covid-19 were 54% more likely to develop digestive problems as constipation, diarrhoea, and bloating, as well as vomiting and stomach pain.

The researchers thus conclude that it’s important to consider GI health as an essential component of post-acute Covid-19 treatment.
